Situated on the north bank of the River Wear and extending from Wearmouth Bridge in the east to the A19 in the west this densely populated area comprises of several smaller suburbs such as Monkwearmouth, Southwick and Castletown together with some of the City’s largest ex local authority housing estates. These areas have been subject of considerable recent capital expenditure on regeneration projects and new private housing initiatives. Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s have recently developed Super Markets and modern business/retail parks have developed along the Wessington Way corridor. The area is ideally placed for easy access to the A19 and regional road networks. Both the European head quarters for Nissan and the Stadium of Light the home of Sunderland Football Club lie within the catchment area.
